A Heart of Bones

My very good friend, Wallace Merritt, called me yesterday afternoon.  “Are you on your computer?”  he asked.  I knew he didn’t mean literally and decided against being a smart ass.  He told me to log on and patiently waited the hour and a half it takes my dinosaur of a PC to wake up.  He then instructed me to go to http://www.neworleansphotoalliance.blogspot.com and to scroll down, which I dutifully did do.  He wanted to hear me scream when I got to this bit:

A Heart of Bones by Wallace Merritt

“We are thrilled that the New Orleans Museum of Art is supporting contemporary photography by sponsoring this amazing event,” said Maja Georgiou, event organizer. “PhotoNOMA was very well attended last year, and we expect it to be one of the most popular events in this years PhotoNOLA lineup. We hope photography enthusiasts and the public at large come out to see the wide range of work that will be on display, and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to meet and engage with the artists.” Photographers from throughout the region will be participating, from the beginning to the well established, including Tim Best, Wallace Merritt and Christopher Porche West.”

That shot was from Lundi Gras last year.  I was at a party (hence the get-up) while Jeff and our buddy, Knox, were up the street as part of a photo shoot at Wallace’s.  Well, the party sucked so I wandered out into the neighborhood (somewhat stoned…) and decided to drop by and see how much longer they expected to be. When Wallace saw me standing at the door all tricked out like that he grabbed me by the hand, whisked me through the house, threw me into a chair in his courtyard and snapped that shot.  Just the one.

When he printed it a few days later he was ecstatic but horrified to show it to me.  Of course, I loved it!  But every time I see it I have to go over to the mirror to reassure myself that I’m not quite that haggard…at least not yet!

Not quite sure how I will feel about seeing that photograph hung on the wall at NOMA tomorrow night though…
